About Opportunity@Work
Opportunity@Work is a 501(c)3 nonprofit social enterprise on a mission to rewire the labor market so all Americans can work, learn, and earn to their full potential. As a national leader in skills-first research, their work advances economic opportunities for the 75+ million U.S. workers who are Skilled Through Alternative Routes (STARs) instead of through a bachelor’s degree.
Why this Matters
AI screening tools are often trained on degree-based career patterns. A STAR's record does not look like one. Skills built through service, certification, or years of on-the-job progression do not map to a degree field, so a missing bachelor's can read as underqualified even when the experience matches or exceeds the role. Through insights and research done in conjunction with Opportunity@Work regarding the STAR community, we aim to help technology providers spot where qualified workers may be overlooked, and help them improve accordingly.
About the Partnership
Opportunity@Work leverages its expertise in career pathways to create test data that measures AI bias towards college degrees.
Opportunity@Work uses its expert insight to contribute to the statistical methodology used to evaluate Education Pathways.
As Warden runs Education Pathways audits against real systems, Opportunity@Work gets real-world feedback to adjust the methods used.
As AI rapidly transforms how employers find and evaluate talent, we have an opportunity to build a skills-first labor market. A degree tells us how someone learned. Skills and experience tell us what someone can actually do
